Hi, Kelly,

I really connected with this column. The column is personally timely. A robin nested on our front porch light this spring. The porch is covered. I think the eggs were close to hatching when I found the nest on the ground yesterday morning. I speculate that the nest slid off the light, but I wonder if a robin’s nest in porch light would attract an owl.

Hard to say what might have knocked it down. Were the eggs damaged/gone? If not, you could just put it back up there. I would think an exposed nest might be more attractive to an owl than one on a light on a covered porch. The first suspect on my list would be a rat snake. They are excellent climbers.

Kelly,

Sadly, the eggs were smashed. A rat snake in Midtown would be a cool addition to my neighborhood, but not for birds or my wife. A critter camera in the yard might tell an interesting night saga.

I look forward to the next installment of the pig eradication challenge.
